Jarus Automation framework simplifies implementing an Enterprise Decision Management (EDM)
solution at corporations aimed at automating and streamlining manual, paper-based business
processes
Enterprise Decision Management (EDM) is a key initiative in many leading corporations.
Powerful business rule technologies are used to automate routine decisions that are made by
humans such as loan approval, insurance underwriting, claims adjudication, complex pricing,
and product configuration. Many EDM initiatives have failed to meet the full potential of
Business Rule technologies because the technology is complex, requires careful design and
implementation and although one of the goals of business rule technology is the ability for
non-technical business users to enter and manage rules, this goal is never achieved.
Based on several years of research and development in this area, the Automation framework
simplifies and streamlines EDM implementation in large corporations. Automation framework
has software components and guidelines to simplify Rule design, Rule authoring, Rule testing
and deployment. Jarus Automation framework supplements leading Business Rule Management
Systems such as Fair Isaac Blaze Advisor, Yasu Quick Rules and enables business analysts
and SME to enter, edit and test business rules using a web front end.
Core components of the Automation framework are shown below:

Service Adapter
The adapter simplifies integration of the EDM components with service clients. Based on Web
services and XML standards, the adapter plugs easily into an existing Enterprise Service Bus
(ESB) to enable enterprise-wide access to the EDM component in a service oriented architecture.
Business Rule Engine
A commercially off-the-shelf business rule engine that executes the rules. We currently support Fair
Isaac Blaze Advisor and Yasu QuickRules.
Rule Repository
A central database of business rules. Rule repository is typically maintained in a relational database.
We currently support IBM DB2 and Oracle.
Rule Management Application
A web based application targeted for business analysts that supplements the IDE supplied by the BRMS
vendor. While IDE is easy for developers, business analysts find it difficult to use rule engine IDE.
Rule Management Applications are web applications deployed on the intranet and they make it easier
for the business analysts to view and edit business rules. Business rules are displayed and edited
using what is called as "rule templates" an easy to understand English sentence with selectable fields
for the condition and action part of the business rules. The templates permit business analysts without
in-depth BRMS expertise view and edit rules without introducing errors. The product ships with many
generic rule templates that are adequate for most situations. Additional templates can be created if
needed by extending the supplied generic templates. The templates also capture additional meta-data to
organize and administer rules.
Rule Regression Testing Framework
A framework and a set of utilities to facilitate testing of the rules after changes are made to the rules
repository. The framework uses Microsoft Excel spreadsheet, a tool most business analysts are comfortable
with, for the specification of the test scenarios in the regression testing process. Analysts enter the
test scenarios and expected outcome in an easy-to-use Excel spreadsheet. The testing utilities use the Excel
spreadsheets as the input data run the test cases through the rule engine, compare actual outcome with
anticipated outcome and report any discrepancies. Detailed information on the results of the regression test
is presented to enable Business Analysts to identify, analyze and resolve any discrepancies found during testing.
